Course summary

Studying English Language and TESOL gives you the opportunity to explore how language works and how societies communicate, alongside teaching English to speakers of other languages – both in theory and practice. This four-year BA English Language and TESOL degree with a Year Abroad opens up a range of exciting career possibilities – teaching English is a great way to see the world and will give you a passport to teach in all kinds of environments. Our graduates in English Language and TESOL have entered a wide range of careers including education, teaching English as a foreign language, business, journalism, media and public relations, law, and speech and language therapy. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will study language teaching methodology, vocabulary, grammar and meaning, psycholinguistics, first and second language acquisition and discourse analysis. You can also develop programming skills through computer-assisted language learning materials and receive training in research methods including reporting and analysis of data. You will have the option to obtain an internationally recognised, professional teaching qualification (Cambridge CELTA) to further enhance your career prospects, and in year three, you will also have the opportunity to study abroad for a year, improving your student experience and career potential. Modules

Your first year will include a mixture of compulsory and optional modules, with examples of compulsory modules from recent years including: • Language Teaching Methodology • Language in Mind • The sound system of English Your second and fourth years will also include a mix of compulsory and optional modules from an expansive range of subject areas. Assessment method

We offer a variety of assessment methods within our programmes. In addition to traditional examinations and essays, examples of alternative assessment include: • Presentations • Group Work • Reflective evaluation Throughout your undergraduate English Language and Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages degree, you will develop excellent research and analytical skills and learn to present your ideas effectively both verbally and in writing.
