Creative Make Up Design and Practice

Course summary

Written in collaboration with industry experts, this course gives undergraduates the opportunity to explore and perfect their approach to establishing a reputation in the make up industry or taking their career to the next level. Undergraduates will be expected to work independently and apply critical thinking as they look into the future of make up design and development. Supported by academic work, they will take part in workshops, practical assessments and design briefs, producing an industry-ready portfolio. Modules will enhance the broad contextual and subject-specific knowledge base, empowering independent study and critical and analytical research. Through the digital design self-initiated project, undergraduates will embed the use of sector appropriate technology, honing skills relating to design and digital, including photography and the use of the digital design suite. Guest speakers will enhance the university experience further, advancing awareness of current trends and products. Undergraduates will work on independent briefs and employ industry-standards whilst working towards their final major project.

You will study a range of core modules including: • Design: Culture and Society 3 • Industry Context • Digital Design Self-initiated Project • Final Project

Assessment method

Coursework, critique and presentations. The course is structured to allow students to foster a self-directed approach developing a reflective and critical approach. Tutors and visiting speakers will provide theoretical sessions using a range of teaching methods such as: • Introductory lectures • Group critiques • Demonstrations • Workshops • Seminars • Project work • Presentations • Individual tutorials • Self-directed study • creative and research journals • Essays • Evaluations • Sketchbooks and portfolio work • practical work multimedia design • experimentation leading to a final visual outcome pitches, proposals, presentations, critiques, and supporting documentation and/or evaluation. Briefings, group and individual tutorials and peer group presentations will allow students to draw upon their strengths improving their independent research and creative skills in order to produce fresh and potentially innovative work that will support progression into industry, self-managed work or further study.

Applicants will need to evidence the following: • Successful completion of a Foundation Degree in Make up OR • A Foundation Degree in another art related subject Entry onto this course is via a successful interview. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check: To gain access to some courses you may need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. If you have criminal convictions or cautions, please do not be put off from applying for the course. Your acceptance on to the course will depend on the nature of any convictions and will be at the discretion of the University Centre and your placement provider. Interview: All applicants are invited to attend an interview with either the Course Leader or Course Tutor. You will be notified of your interview by our Admissions Team who will also update UCAS Track with details of your application.

Interview

Additional Selection Criteria: Meeting the minimum entry requirement for a course does not necessarily guarantee a place. Entry to all courses is subject to a successful interview. When assessing an application, we take into account your grades, predicted grades, reference and personal statement. From your personal statement and interview, we consider your motivation and commitment to success, and any relevant experience you may have. For some courses, we may also ask for a portfolio of appropriate work or you may be required to find a work placement prior to enrolment.

Portfolio

UK Applicants: At the interview they will be required to present a portfolio of work that displays their skills to their best advantage. European Applicants: European applicants may not be able to attend an interview in the UK. Once the application has been processed, they should submit an e-portfolio, CD or DVD of their recent work; this will be followed by a telephone interview.


English language requirements

EU students, for whom English is not the first language, will be required to evidence an IELTS score or 6.0 or equivalent. Equivalences include: • TOEFL written examination score of 550 plus a test of written English (at 4) • TOEFL Computer Equivalent score of 230 • Proficiency in English (Cambridge) at Grade C or above
