Course summary

You'll study farm, companion and zoo animal nutrition and the international animal feed industry. You'll learn about the latest developments in animal nutrition and consider the ethical implications associated with these trends. The programme covers the principles of nutrition including the role of diet relating to disease, feeding systems and operational management. You will cover nutrition from the molecular level through to whole animal production systems. This includes: the effects of nutrients on cellular signalling processes dietary evaluation, comparative digestive physiology and feeding behaviour across farm, zoo and companion species a detailed operational understanding of the animal feed industry Site visits, case studies and guest lectures will build your industry knowledge. This helps you to apply science to real-life industry problems. You'll also use the University Farm and Dairy Centre during the course. There is a dedicated module on research techniques. This covers writing and presentation skills, and scientific communications.

Modules

On the masters degree you will complete a research project supported by a subject specialist. You'll study the research process, and learn techniques in animal and laboratory research. Other core modules cover ruminant and non-ruminant nutrition. You'll consider the implications of nutrition on feed efficiency, fertility and health. You'll cover nutrition from the molecular level through to the whole animal production system. You'll examine the effects of nutrients on cellular signaling processes and gene expression. Studying the feed industry business, you'll get a detailed understanding of feed manufacturing. You'll use this to evaluate diet and formulation for farmed livestock, companion and zoo animals.


Entry requirements

2:2 level or above (or its international equivalent) in a biological, chemistry, biochemical engineering or other relevant science from a recognised university; relevant workplace experience may also be accepted. Please see the course page on our website for more details.
