Course summary

The music industry has changed. Today’s successful musicians are multi-instrumentalists who can produce their own music, manage their own projects and capitalise on their online channels. This course is aimed at producing versatile, musically-literate graduates with the skills, theoretical knowledge and networks needed to develop lasting careers as professional musicians. On our Degree you will learn from professional musicians working in the industry who bring their practical knowledge and expertise into the classroom. So, whether you are an Instrumentalist, Songwriter, Performer, Producer, Arranger or Media Composer this is the course for you. This course is designed to give you a broad range of skills to maximise your employability. You will develop high-level skills in your chosen specialist area, such as your instrument. These are supported by a broader range of skills that relate to contemporary music. In addition, you will acquire experience and transferable skills that are essential to all careers. You will study three modules per semester, one of which is core and the other two will be chosen from the pathways below (the one exception being that you cannot pick both Performance pathways as your two choices): · Instrumental · Contemporary Performance · Songwriting · Production · Jazz Performance It is understood that from the two pathways chosen you will pursue those for the duration of the course. However, there is the option at Level 5 for you to switch to one or both of the below: · Media Music · Music Directing and Arranging The BMus Music Performance & Production is complemented by a Foundation year course aimed at students whose musical skills need improving to gain UG entry. Study at this level is designed to give students a structured musical education, for example if you have not studied music formally at Level 3 or had prior access to private music lessons. The course is built so students will learn and achieve the sufficient musical, industry and study skills. It concentrates on ensuring students develop a foundation level of technique on their chosen principal instrument. The course also provides an introduction to music theory and core performance, rehearsal and study skills. We believe that the Foundation year will allow students to be fully prepared for our BMus UG course, as they will have achieved the full set of knowledge and practical skills required to study at Level 4. You will learn: · An understanding of rudimentary music theory · Development of natural musicianship · Essential instrumental and performance skills · The ability to collaborate · Key Academic Study Skills · An understanding of core Industry skill

Modules

Starting with one core module, you then select additional subjects that fit your own musical interests. For instance, as a guitarist, you may choose to focus on performance, or combine guitar with a wider range of other subjects including production or music programming. Core modules (depending on your year) include: Harmony and Theory; Working in the Music Industry; History of Popular Music. Optional modules include: Principal Instrument; Professional Performance; Jazz Performance; Music Programming; Studio and Production; Songwriting; Composing for Media Broadcast; Musical Directing and Arranging.

Audition

All applicants meeting the minimum entry requirements and whose application demonstrates the capability to complete this programme, will be offered an audition. You will be asked questions on music theory, notation and asked to identify intervals and chord qualities by ear. The purpose of this process is for us to be able to assess what you already know and how quickly we think you can learn. Guitarists, pianists, bassists and singers will prepare two songs of their own choice, typically to be performed without a backing track. The songs must be in contrasting styles to show the breadth of your ability. One tune can be an original but not both. They will also be required to demonstrate a range of technical skills relevant to your instrument such as scales, arpeggios, chord voicings and sight-reading. Drummers will be asked to play a range of common grooves, styles and feels such as rock, funk, jazz, Afro-Cuban, straight, swing and shuffle. They will be required to count, play time and perform different fills. Finally, they will be asked to show what you like to play and the time for your chops! Saxes, flute and brass will prepare two songs of their own choice with a backing track. The songs must be in contrasting styles to show the breadth of your ability. One tune can be an original but not both. They can bring an accompanist for the performance backing track. They will also be required to demonstrate a range of technical skills relevant to your instrument such as scales, arpeggios and sight-reading. Producers, Songwriters and Media Composers will be asked to bring two songs they have written or produced. Songwriters will be asked about lyrics, harmony and form; producers and media composers will be asked about the hardware, software and instruments you used in the production of your work. They may be asked to perform one of their own songs, if they play an instrument. There will also be an assessment of their music theoretical knowledge.
