Reasons to choose Kingston

  • This foundation year helps you prepare for your degree in Midwifery, providing you with essential skills for success.
  • Kingston University is ranked No.1 in London for Midwifery (Guardian University Guide 2025).
  • You will develop your interdisciplinary skills as you will study alongside other nursing and science students.
We recognise that there are many routes to success at degree level. This foundation year option provides an entry route for students from a wide range of backgrounds who may not have the traditional entry qualifications to join the first year of a Nursing or Midwifery degree. This foundation year will help you develop both personally and professionally, providing you with the tools to begin your journey towards becoming a competent, sensitive professional who can perform effectively in a variety of settings and work in collaboration with other professionals. You will develop practical, technical and communication skills, and apply knowledge to real-life problems. You will gain awareness about the attitudes and behaviours required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to succeed on a professional programme, and in your future career. You will also learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and how these link to healthcare. Following successful completion of your foundation year, you will join the BMid Midwifery with Registered Midwife, which offers both a degree and a professional midwifery qualification. You'll graduate ready to enter the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and register as a qualified midwife. Placements are available in maternity units in hospital and community settings throughout South London and Surrey.
