Course summary

Game audio is a rapidly expanding and extremely creative area of the video games industry. Our master’s in game audio, MA Sound Design for Video Games, is designed to prepare you creatively and technically to work as a sound designer and eventually an audio lead or audio director. Taught and mentored by top game audio professionals, you will learn how to create the sounds that bring the world of video games to life. You will also learn to use audio middleware software, such as Wwise and FMOD, to implement your sounds into game engines like Unity and Unreal. As a school of game audio we focus on employability and even support you after you graduate with our Employment Support Program. For those with a background in audio production, audio engineering or music, Sound Design for Video Games offers a great career opportunity in a fast growing industry. On this course, you will learn:

  • To create game sound effects both from your own recordings and sourced from commercial libraries.
  • How to use inexpensive and readily available field recording equipment to produce atmospheres, spot-effects and Foley.
  • Technical skills like creating and implementing Foley, weapons, impacts and vehicle sounds.
  • Business skills to help you produce a winning portfolio that will help you into a new career.
  • Collaborative and remote working skills, vital in such a connected global industry.
Our teaching staff and mentors are all current working professionals, many involved at the highest level in the business. They’ve worked for almost every major game studio, including Electronic Arts, Blizzard, Bandai, Nintendo, Capcom, Frontier and Dambusters Studios. Here are a few of the many who will be giving you individual feedback, either in writing, during weekly one to one mentoring sessions, or at the student workshops. Their game composition and audio credits include: Call of Duty Infinite Warfare League of Legends Batman Arkham Knight Forza Horizon 2 Resident Evil Warhammer: Total War Lego 2KDrive Metal Gear Rising Cyberpunk 2077 Wolfstein Youngblood Team Sonic Racing Need For Speed Shift Walking Dead Assault Plus we regularly host invite visiting lecturers to provide additional real-world insights and inspiration.

Modules

Students will complete these core modules: Foundations of Game Music and Audio Game Audio Technology Research and Critical Reflection Sound and the Moving Image Interactive Audio 3D Audio Environments *Elective Final Major Project or Dissertation *For the Elective module, students will choose 1 from: FMOD Unreal & Blueprint Musical Sound Design Audio Post-Production Career Development for Sound Designers

Assessment method

For the vast majority of the course, you will be entirely graded on your practical ability. All assignments come with written write-ups where you will detail your approach. Each module will have at least one 'Formative' assignment, which is considered research and practice for the final 'Summative' assignment, which will be your final grade for that module. All Summative assignments are marked at least twice.


Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in any subject. A limited number of places are available for non-degree holders, under the 'Recognition of Prior Learning' application method. We also require applicants to complete a short application task, and potentially submit a portfolio of work depending on the course. All information can be found on the course page on our website.
