Course summary

The Masters in Real Estate has been developed in close consultation with the relevant professional, policy and business communities and is intended to provide an intensive fast-track entry to a professional career. You will have the opportunity to study real estate with a specialism in finance and investment, sustainability or housing, to enable you to tailor your degree to a specific area of real estate surveying. WHY THIS PROGRAMME

  • Professionally accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), this programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to work as a chartered surveyor in both commercial and residential property sectors.
  • Specialist pathways allow you to explore a particular area of real estate in more detail, with a focus on finance and investment, sustainability or housing.
  • The programme features input from industry, including teaching on some courses, guest lectures and seminars. You will have the opportunity to meet industry professionals at recruitment presentations and events organised by the University of Glasgow.
  • The programme captures a blend of academic and professional experience across a number of real estate disciplines that ensures the materials taught are of current relevance for students wanting to enter the profession.
  • You will also have opportunities to speak to recent graduates about how the programme has prepared them for their entry into the profession, and what the steps involved in gaining professional accreditation are, in order to help you prepare for the 'next step'.
  • An optional field trip to London will provide you with an insight into the complex socio-economic dynamics of city building and design through visits to high profile real estate, planning and regeneration projects. Past trips have included visits to The Shard, King’s Cross, Battersea Power Station and a number of grassroots projects that focus on community development.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE You will take eight core courses, along with a selection of one additional specialist core course and two optional courses, based on your chosen pathway. In semester 2 you will undertake either a major project or a dissertation, both of which are designed to support you in applying research, writing, and analytical skills. Core courses Applied Built Environment Research Contemporary Questions in Real Estate Development Appraisal for Real Estate Surveyors Economics of Planning and Development Lab Property Law for Real Estate Surveyors Real Estate Finance and Investment Real Estate Markets Real Estate Valuation and Appraisal (10) Real Estate and Planning Dissertation OR Real Estate and Planning Major Resarch Project: The major project option is new to the Real Estate programme in 2025-26 and reflects the outcome of a detailed consultation process with external academics and employers, designed to make the learning objectives across the programme are as up to date and relevant as possible for students entering the profession. In selecting the major project option instead of the traditional academic dissertation, you will consider a research issue directly relating to existing real estate practice. Having identified appropriate research questions, you will develop, utilising relevant theoretical sources wherever required, a practical, response to the challenge you have identified. It is also our intention to develop and offer a limited number of direct projects in collaboration with relevant employers. In addition students in the School of Social and Political Sciences are able to conduct collaborative dissertations, with agreement from the College Employability team.
