The Higher National Certificate in Performing Arts (Technical Arts) is a one-year course designed to equip students with wide range of technical and creative skills relevant to the progression on to the HND level 5 Higher National Diploma in Technical Arts. It is an exciting and innovative course designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the dynamic and ever-evolving field of the make-up industry. This course will give you the knowledge, practical experience, and confidence to pursue a career in this industry as a professional make-up artist for theatre, fashion, video, and television. It is aimed at dedicated learners who want to move into the creative industries or further training and are looking for practical training and a nationally recognised Level 4 qualification. Experienced professionals who are experts in the industry and have extensive industry and teaching profiles deliver this course. The course provides students with an opportunity to master the skills and techniques of Hair and Make-up application and develop higher level skills which is essential for a career in the Make-up industry. The knowledge and skills acquired on the programme link directly to the vocational context.

Assessment method

You will be assessed through formative and summative practical assessments, we will provide feedback on formal coursework submissions to enable you to learn and develop throughout the course. This includes feedback on draft or ‘formative’ assessment work at least once per module.

Qualification requirements

It is expected that all applicants will hold relevant Level 2 maths and English qualifications equivalent to GCSE grade C/4 or above. Mature students: The University Centre welcomes applications from mature students who have relevant experience in lieu of the minimum entry requirements. Mature students (over 21) without formal qualifications may be accepted subject to satisfactory literacy and numeracy tests, work experience (if applicable) and a strong personal statement. Recognition of Prior Learning: Applicants may meet entry requirements through the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which awards academic credits through recognition of prior learning via work and other life experiences. Recognition of Prior Learning is either certificated (RPCL) through formal assessment, or Experiential (RPEL) via skills and knowledge developed through work and voluntary activities.
