You’ll gain a strong foundation in the science behind good nutrition, disease, treatment, and prevention. You’ll explore:

Modules

During the foundation year, you will complete core modules in English and Mathematics, as well as an extended project which will develop your skills in carrying out research, using scholarly sources, drawing comparisons between your own research and that of others and documenting your findings. You will study two modules in Life Sciences which will give you the opportunity to explore methods of scientific thinking and reasoning in an enquiry-based way. You will also be introduced to key concepts in human physiology that are common cornerstones of the different degree programmes. In your first year you will be introduced to the principles of human nutrition, vitamins and minerals, physiology and metabolism as well as aspects of psychology that can influence food intakes. You will develop a thorough understanding of the relationship between food, nutrition, and health. Your second year includes a focus on research methods that prepares you for a research project on a subject of your choice in the third year. You will embark on specialised studies of particular aspects of nutrition such as food safety and dietary assessment. Barriers to healthy eating are examined to identify strategies that could improve the diet and health of the nation. In your final year, you'll conduct your own research project in nutrition under the guidance of one of our expert tutors. You can advance your specialist knowledge and add to your understanding of aspects of health and disease that are influenced by diet.
