Course summary
Practical. Critical. Creative. Do you want to combine practical filmmaking skills with the ability to critically analyse film in a range of contexts? From filmmaking to film criticism, digital content creation, film festival programming, archival curation, and more, this BA (Hons) Film degree provides you with the comprehensive knowledge and skills needed for employment in the screen industries, and beyond. Formerly known as ‘BA Film and TV Production’, this degree is taught by Northumbria’s leading film practitioners, theoreticians, and historians – all bringing research to life in your workshops, lectures, and seminars. The BA Film combines theory and practice: you will make your own film projects, from dramas and documentaries to music and experimental films, while also exploring the impact of film on society and culture. This degree is dynamic, interdisciplinary, and addresses real world challenges, all while equipping you for your career in industry. Extended Degree This extended degree provides an alternative route to higher education and supports those who don’t meet the standard entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. It includes a foundation year which helps develop your skills, build confidence, and foster creativity. The extended degree gives you the chance to establish a strong academic foundation while exploring a wide range of creative art disciplines within film, media, and theatre. What will I learn in my Foundation Year? The foundation year of this course is dedicated to developing the fundamental skills needed to grow as a critical and reflective arts practitioner, covering practical, intellectual, and creative aspects. You will engage with topics such as effective communication, teamwork, time and project management, research, and digital literacy. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in dynamic and challenging studio environments. As part of the year, you will complete an assessed portfolio, which may include various components like performances, short films, artwork, and live practice. The foundation year of the course delivered at level 3 which develops your ability to study in Higher Education is not accredited. Subsequent levels and years are accredited and deliver the knowledge, competencies, and skills required to meet the specific course accreditation requirements that relate to the approved accredited award title.
