Course summary

The Raindance International Degree Program in Directing is a unique course, designed to give our students the opportunity to experience acting across 2 continents and achieve a full UK university degree at the end of the third year. Starting your journey in London (or online), where we will prepare you for international studies and the pathway of your choice. You will then spend eight months at our London campus where you will build a solid foundation in your chosen pathway. At the end of your first year, you will achieve a level 4 certificate. During year 2, you will travel to Guadalajara, Mexico where you will spend the next eight months to further develop your skills and will have the opportunity to work on real film projects in Spanish or in English. At the end of year 2, you will achieve a level 5 Diploma. In your final year, you will return to London to join the Top-Up BA (Hon’s) in Film and Performing Arts Practices. This is a practical, hands-on course that builds upon the skills you developed in your previous years.

Modules

Year 1: Foundation Module 1: Concept & Development Develop a Directorial Vision Learn to establish a clear directorial vision and understand the director’s role in interpreting and shaping a script. Directing Actors Develop the skills to effectively direct actors, focusing on communication and creating emotional depth in performances. Master Visual Storytelling Learn to use visual elements like composition, framing, and camera movement to convey narrative meaning. Module 2: Creative Project Directing for the Screen Master the fundamentals of directing a scene, including pacing, blocking, and guiding performance. Technical Mastery in Filmmaking Understand and apply the technical aspects of filmmaking, including lighting, sound, and camera work, in collaboration with a crew. Final Directing Project Gain comprehensive experience in full-scale directing, managing the process from pre-production to post-production, ensuring that all elements serve the story. Year 2: Specialisation Module 1: Concept & Development Master Advanced Directorial Techniques Learn to incorporate advanced storytelling techniques such as non-linear storytelling, flashbacks, and multi-strand narratives into your direction. Develop Collaborative Directing Skills Understand how to effectively collaborate with a large cast and crew, managing communication and logistics in complex productions. Refine Cinematic LanguageDeepen your understanding of cinematic language, using shot composition, framing, and camera movement to enhance visual storytelling. Module 2: Creative Project Direct a Feature-Length Film Segment Gain experience directing a longer narrative, ensuring pacing and consistency across a feature-length project. Revise and Refine Directing Improve your directing skills by revising past projects, using feedback to enhance your work. Prepare for the Industry Learn essential skills for pitching and presenting a project to industry professionals. Year 3 In the final year, students can choose one (double) or two (single) specialist pathways in either Acting, Directing or Screenwriting. All students will produce their own film projects and develop advanced skills in film and television practices. Assessment is via practical creative projects, written reflective reports of your work and research assignments. Modules: Critical Research (15 Credits) Specialist Negotiated Practical Project (45 Credits) Film & TV Business Practices (15 Credits) Film Practices Final Project (45 Credits)

Assessment method

Assessment is through a series of assignments including research modules, hands-on practical exercises and group projects. Units are interlinked to replicate “real world” scenarios and offer the opportunity for students to build a range of skills to maximise employment opportunities.
