Course summary
Students undertake independent research projects and receive regular advice from a specialist supervisor. Current areas of research include: Central and East European studies; eEnvironmental history; historical research; Iranian studies; mediaeval history; mediaeval studies; Middle Eastern history, and culture; modern historiography; modern history; Reformation studies; Scottish historical studies; the book; history and techniques of analysis.
Modules
No modules are studied as part of the PhD programme. Many of the postgraduate students already at the university have been attracted to St Andrews by their wish to be supervised by a certain member of staff, often a leading contributor to his or her field. The research interests of members of staff range from 6th century Scotland to America in the 1970s and with over fifty active researchers the number of areas of expertise is very large.
Assessment method
MPhil: 9 months of coursework followed by a dissertation of 40,000 words completed in the final 15 months. PhD: An original thesis of 80,000 words.
Entry requirements
Applicants are expected to have completed a Master's degree. Each application is based on its own merits. Students whose 1st language is not English must submit evidence of language competency.
