Sports and Exercise Science (Including Foundation Year)

Course summary

Our BSc Sports and Exercise Science (including Foundation Year) could be suitable for you if your academic qualifications do not yet meet our entry requirements for a three-year version of our sports and exercise science courses and you want a programme that improves your skills to support your academic performance. Open to UK and EU applicants, this four-year course includes a Foundation Year (known as Year Zero) which is delivered by our Essex Pathways Department followed by a further three years of study in our School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences (SRES). During Year Zero you will study on our Sport and Exercise Science Pathway which will cover topics such as Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology, and Mathematics and Statistics for Sport. At the end of Year Zero all students who pass the Sports and Exercise Science Pathway will progress onto BSc Sports and Exercise Science. From Year One, you study topics including:

  • how and why different energy systems are deployed at different exercise intensities
  • biomechanical principles behind acute and chronic sporting injuries, and how these can be applied to prevent injuries
  • the role of ergogenic aids in improving athletic performance
  • how physical activity and nutrition can reduce the risk of cardio-metabolic disease
  • the design and implementation of psychological skills training programmes
Practical work in your first two years provides you with the professional and scientific skills you need to conduct your own research project in your final year, and to make the transition to postgraduate study or a fulfilling career in a range of industries, especially sport, health and education. As part of our School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences, you'll have an exciting opportunity to join a community specifically focused on sports and exercise science, sports therapy and physiotherapy. We bring together research, share knowledge, and enhance placement and vocational opportunities for our students and graduates.
