Course summary

You’ll have the option of three pathways if you choose this course, all of which lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): • PGCE Primary Education 3-7 with QTS • PGCE Primary Education 5-11 with QTS • PGCE Primary Education 5-11 Physical Education with QTS Over a 10-month period, this course will: • Prepare you to develop a deep understanding of how children learn and equip you with the knowledge and skills to become a confident and successful Early Career Teacher • The 3-7 pathway will give you the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Early Years and Key Stage 1 • The 5-11 pathways, will focus upon developing your knowledge of teaching Key Stages 1 and 2 Your modules Visit the teaching and learning section, further down this page, for more details on your modules. You’ll be awarded 60 master’s credits and QTS on successful completion of three core modules. Your teaching experiences You’ll develop your own teacher identity and teaching style thanks to our critically reflective learning approach. This will empower you to deliver innovative lessons with confidence. Intensive training and practice opportunities throughout this course will focus on areas identified as educational priority areas for example: • Behaviour management • SEND • Systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) • Early Reading This will enable a richness and scope to allow you to be immersed in the focus of the school experience. Placements You’ll gain extensive training in schools and settings across the age range for which you are training to teach. You’ll complete two teaching placements in two different schools, supported by your school mentor and university tutors. In addition, our training programme will support you in your school placements, covering for example areas such as: • Planning and preparation • Promoting inclusive practice • Developing thinking skills We’ll also provide opportunities to apply what you have learned through practice with support from expert colleagues in schools. 5-11 Physical Education with QTS pathway If you have a passion for physical activity and sports, you could choose to train on our 5-11 pathway with the additional specialism of physical education (PE). You’ll use our superb sports facilities as you learn to promote, shape and develop the teaching of PE within a primary school setting. You’ll gain all the experience of becoming a primary teacher in this age range with the addition of specialist PE knowledge. Entry requirements

Applicants should have at least a second class honours degree. GCSE English Language, Maths and a Science at Grade 4 (Grade C for those sitting their GCSE before 2017) or above, or an equivalent award including some equivalency tests, are required prior to the course start date. Suitable applicants will be invited to an interview as part of the admissions process. The interview process has two main purposes: -To establish whether you have the attributes that will enable you to cope with both the professional demands of the course and the related academic work -To give you the opportunity to explain what attracts you to teaching as a career and why you think you are a suitable candidate. The interview will involve a group activity and an individual interview. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the course. DBS, self declaration, health check required.
