Course summary

Birkbeck's Master's degree in health and clinical psychological sciences is designed for graduates with a background in psychology. It is ideal if you want to deepen your understanding of cutting-edge contemporary research in health, including health psychology, applied neuropsychology and trauma and addiction, and the factors contributing to physical and mental health outcomes. What you will learn The course begins with a focus on contemporary health psychology, addiction and trauma, applied neuropsychology and interventions. There is a strong emphasis on developing your research skills in both quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as research synthesis and generic research skills, which you will apply to your dissertation. How you will learn You can study this course full- or part-time. It has a daytime timetable with classes running in the daytime on campus, except for the Neurocases and Clinical Assessments module which is taught in the evening and delivered online. You will be taught via a mixture of interactive lectures and workshops, and assessments include case studies, essays, a systematic review and presentations. We offer different module combinations to give you the choice of studying for an MA or MSc. Highlights

Assessment method

Assessment is through a combination of presentations, written worksheets, essays, a critical review and mini systematic review, and a dissertation.


How to apply

International applicants

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, the requirement for this course is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. If you don't meet the minimum IELTS requirement, we offer pre-sessional English courses and foundation programmes to help you improve your English language skills and get your place at Birkbeck.

Entry requirements

A second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in psychology or a related discipline (e.g. neuroscience, nursing or health sciences). Applications are reviewed on their individual merits and your professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively. We actively support and encourage applications from mature learners.
