  • Traditional news, current affairs and magazine shows continue to serve huge swathes of global audiences - you will be trained to produce them. But you will also be taught how to rethink and often reversion their material to post on our live local news website, Eastlondonlines, reflecting the changing dynamics of broadcast media in the digital age.
  • This Master's degree will be led by respected journalists, producers, filmmakers and scholars who have worked on major media outlets including the BBC and Al Jazeera English, The Independent, The Guardian in local, national and international journalism. Under their guidance, this programme will provide students with innovative and professional skills to prepare them for what is an increasingly competitive journalism landscape.

Modules

Compulsory modules include: Introduction to News Reporting Introduction to Broadcast Journalism Multimedia Broadcast Journalism Journalism in Context Media Law and Ethics Power, Politics and Public Affairs Final Project Advanced Television Journalism OR Advanced Audio Journalism Optional modules You will have the opportunity to choose a 15 credit skills-based optional module from an approved list of journalism modules published annually. This could include modules on topics such as Data Visualisation, Critical Social Media Practices (OSINT and Forensic Journalism) or Podcasting. You may also choose to audit - ie attend without assessment - a wide range of modules in the Department of Media Communications and Cultural Studies, subject to academic approval and timetable considerations. Facilities You will have access to a fully equipped television studio with production gallery, a radio/audio newsroom and recording/broadcast studio, audio and video editing suites and our journalism labs, with professional editing and online publishing software. You will be supported and advised throughout by our skilled and experienced technical team. EastLondonLines As part of your studies, you will work on EastLondonlines, the independent multimedia news website run by the journalism team at Goldsmiths, which covers a large area of south and east London. You will have the opportunity to take on a variety of production and reporting roles and use your multimedia skills to produce content for the site. You will learn the conventions and legal/ethical framework of newsgathering and reporting by creating cross platform broadcast journalism in real time for a real audience. *Please note the module content and availability is subject to change.


Entry requirements

You should have (or expect to be awarded) an undergraduate degree of at least upper second class standard and have evidence of some journalism experience (student publications, freelance work or work experience is usually acceptable). If you do not have sufficient experience you may be asked to demonstrate your aptitude for journalism and ability to write at this level. We accept a wide range of international qualifications. If English isn’t your first language, you will need an IELTS score (or equivalent English language qualification) of 7.0 with a 7.0 in writing to study this programme.
