Course summary
The one-year Higher National Diploma Top-Up in Computing for England is a brand new higher technical qualification that will provide students with high-quality training, skills and knowledge to succeed in their careers. The course is designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in intelligent systems and builds on students’ previous study at level 4. The qualification can enhance the career prospects of those who undertake it and, on completion, students may wish to progress to the one-year BSc (Hons) Computing (Top-Up) to complete their degree. The course covers the Intelligent Systems pathway and equips students with a solid understanding of the skills and knowledge to be successful in the computing industry. Strong links to business and the computing sector will facilitate industry-related briefs and real scenarios that provide an opportunity for students to acquire professional work ethics, time planning skills and working within a team.

Assessment method
The programme is assessed through submission of written reports and practical solutions such as programming, database development and web applications. Formative assessment is primarily developmental in nature and is designed to give feedback to students on their performance and progress, with support. Summative assessment is given where students are provided with the assignment grades contributing towards the overall unit grade.

Qualification requirements
HNC (BTEC)
It is expected that all applicants will hold relevant Level 2 maths and English qualifications equivalent to GCSE grade C/4 or above. Mature students: The University Centre welcomes applications from mature students who have relevant experience in lieu of the minimum entry requirements. Mature students (over 21) without formal qualifications may be accepted subject to satisfactory literacy and numeracy tests, work experience (if applicable) and a strong personal statement. Recognition of Prior Learning: Applicants may meet entry requirements through the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which awards academic credits through recognition of prior learning via work and other life experiences. Recognition of Prior Learning is either certificated (RPCL) through formal assessment, or Experiential (RPEL) via skills and knowledge developed through work and voluntary activities.
