Course summary

This wide-ranging course will develop your knowledge of different periods of history from around 1500 to the twentieth century. This includes looking at when the United Kingdom experienced rapid industrial and imperial expansion, but also political conflict, poverty and uncertainty. You’ll tackle exciting and challenging issues such as power and warfare, culture and beliefs, health and medicine, imperialism, race, class and gender. You’ll begin to develop the skills of the historian in studying historical materials; exploring how we understand, interpret and debate past events; and investigating a range of critical approaches. Modules

This diploma has two stages. In Stage 1, you'll encounter a variety of different times and places and engage with some fascinating people, art works, ideas and stories. As a history student, this broad foundation will help you develop the skills and the confident, open approach you need to tackle more specialist history modules at Stage 2. In Stage 2, you'll explore the society and culture of Europe between 1500 and 1789, a time when society was transforming rapidly while still remaining rooted in medieval times. You'll learn about the British Isles from 1789 to 1914, when the United Kingdom was experiencing rapid industrial and imperial expansion, but also political conflict, poverty and uncertainty.
