Course summary

The MSc Advanced Biomedical Science programme has been developed to address the evolving challenges in clinical laboratory practice by equipping students with advanced scientific knowledge, research expertise, and leadership skills. As the field of biomedical science continues to advance, there is a growing need for scientific leaders who can drive innovation, enhance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, and improve healthcare outcomes. This programme fosters a multidisciplinary approach, encouraging collaboration and critical thinking to tackle complex biomedical issues. Industry collaboration, authentic assessment, and interprofessional opportunities bridge the gap between academic study and real-world biomedical science practice. Authentic assessments provide meaningful, experience-based assessment that mirrors professional responsibilities, preparing students for leadership roles in biomedical science. Interprofessional learning further develops this by fostering collaboration across disciplines, encouraging students to think beyond their specialism, and equipping them with the communication and teamwork skills essential for innovation within clinical laboratory settings. These elements combine to produce graduates who are well-prepared to take on leadership roles in clinical, academic, and industrial settings, contributing to the transformation of biomedical science through research, innovation, and professional excellence. On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: MSc Advanced Biomedical Science

Assessment method

Assessment is authentic, practice-informed, and designed to develop scientific leaders. Real-world assessments such as research proposals, business plans, data-driven decision-making exercises, and professional presentations mirror the requirements of professional practice and provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate their ability to conduct independent research, critically evaluate clinical data and communicate findings effectively, and apply the leadership skills and professional acumen necessary to drive innovation in biomedical science.

Entry requirements

You’ll normally need a minimum 2:2 honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject. However, accredited professional qualifications or vocational experience can be considered, and we strongly encourage anyone interested in the course to get in touch.
