Course summary

Designed in collaboration with industry, this course teaches you the skills the sustainable and renewable energy sector needs. Learning in the heart of the UK’s ‘energy estuary’, you’ll cover a diverse range of renewable energy technologies. And gain a thorough overview of the industry. You’ll explore technologies including on-shore and off-shore wind, solar power, hydropower and biofuels. Along with carbon removal and low-carbon solutions and environmental management and policy. Through practical lab classes you’ll develop industry-relevant research and analytical skills. Build your digital knowhow working with industry-standard software such as windPRO. Carry out resource analysis and environmental impact assessments. And enhance your professional skills including teamworking, presentation, report writing and project management. Our strong industry links give you the chance to take part in field trips to renewable energy sites in the region. Along with opportunities to hear from guest speakers from the sector. You’ll be able to specialise in an area of choice in your dissertation and could get the opportunity to carry out real-world research.

Assessment method

The teaching programme is led by the University’s Energy and Environment Institute and runs over two semesters. All modules are compulsory. Each module is worth 20 credits Students take 60 credits in each of the two semesters and then 60 credits for the dissertation. The Summer Dissertation consists of an individually supervised research project often undertaken in association with local authorities, business or industry.

International applicants

If you require a student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level. This course requires academic IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each skill. See other accepted English language proficiency qualifications. If your English currently does not reach the required standard, you may be interested in our pre-sessional English Language programmes.

Entry requirements

Normally a Bachelor Honours degree (2.2. or above), or international equivalent, in an engineering or science subject and GCSE Maths or equivalent. If you hold a degree in another subject area, we would still encourage you to apply as we are looking for a real interest and passion for renewable energy and the environment. So we would be happy to consider your application. In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group, if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved. In addition, existing undergraduate students at the University of Hull have a guaranteed ‘Fast Track’ route to any postgraduate programme, subject to meeting the entry criteria.
