Course summary
The MA Print at the RCA explores the technical image and printed matter from a contemporary art perspective, valuing both historical legacies and experimental futures. You will make work through workshops, exhibitions, publishing and writing, using expansive print processes and engaging with archives, global media, and methods of presentation. The programme supports you to develop your personal voice through self-reflexivity and experimentation, questioning the relationship between material and virtual forms of image multiplication. With input from practicing artists, seminars, tutorials and talks, you interrogate originality, authenticity and the impact of technologies on how images are communicated and distributed. Modules
Term 1 In term 1, you take Orientation, Induction and Experimentation, which begins with orientation sessions, technical inductions, seminars, and visits to exhibitions and archives. You are encouraged to experiment in studio practice, exploring new ways of making and thinking about print. Term 2 In term 2, you take Development and Context, which deepens your engagement in making work and thinking about how it can be exhibited, published, or contextualised. In the same term, you take Urgency of the Arts school-wide unit that explores how arts and humanities practice can respond to urgent sociopolitical issues through workshops and specialist-led discussions. Term 3 In term 3, you take Independent Research Project, creating a body of work for a public exhibition (or publication), reflecting on your practice, and articulating your professional future. AcrossRCA (Terms 1 & 2) During the first two terms, you participate in the AcrossRCA college-wide unit, collaborating with students from other programmes on a self-initiated themed project that addresses cultural, social, environmental or economic issues.
Entry requirements
We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds and from all over the world. RCA alumni come from a wide range of backgrounds and industries, bringing diverse experiences including those unrelated to art, which enrich the creative community and drive fresh perspectives. As part of your application, you may need to submit: A portfolio showcasing your work and artistic vision. A personal statement (around 300 words) describing your interests, motivations, and future goals. An introduction video (maximum 2 minutes) to introduce yourself and explain your artistic approach and project ideas.
