Course summary

The Higher National Certificate in Architectural Technology for England is a level 4 qualification that includes enhanced work-related curriculum that is designed to address an increasing need for high quality professional and technically competent staff. Aligned to the occupational standard for Construction build and design technician, it has been quality marked as a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ). It aims to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The course is designed to help students secure a wide range of construction knowledge linked to practical skills gained through research, independent study, directed study and workplace scenarios. The course will provide you with the critical skills and practical competencies sought by employers and required for progression to further higher education study such as the HND in Architectural Technology for England. This programme is an excellent progression option from the successful completion of the Level 3 BTEC National Certificate/Diploma or Extended Diploma in Construction or Civil Engineering. Preference will be given to merit grade students. Students with considerable experience with the industry will also be considered. This course is delivered full-time two days per week over 1 year, or part-time, one day per week over 2 years, making it an excellent option for those employed in the sector who are looking to further develop their skills.

Modules

A variety of topics will be covered including, but not limited to: Construction design, Construction technology, Building information modelling, Digital applications for construction information and Principles of refurbishment.

Assessment method

This course is assessed using a combination of: ● centre-developed internal assignments that are set and assessed by Exeter College, and ● Pearson-set assignments, which are set by centres in line with Person guidelines and graded by Exeter College. For the HNC, Exeter College will assess one compulsory Pearson-set unit targeted at particular skills. For internally assessed units, assessment takes the form of an assignment. An assignment may take a variety of forms, including practical and written.
