Course summary

Our specialised Neonatal Care PG Cert is for registered nurses and midwives, working in a high dependency or intensive neonatal care setting. It’ll provide a recognised qualification to progress in the neonatal unit. Are you looking to gain further knowledge and skills to work with families and babies who require additional support and care? Specialist nurses and midwives are in demand in the NHS and beyond and are essential for the safe care of babies, their survival and long-term care. You'll explore and evaluate factors relating to the delivery and care, interventions and the management of infants needing special care. You’ll critically assess care, using data and evidence and use this to promote real change in your practice. You’ll examine your own professional development through reflective thinking and recommend a plan for quality improvement. You’ll also gain specialist skills giving you an important role within the neonatal team. To be able to access this course you must be employed in a high dependency or intensive neonatal care setting, with support from your manager.

Assessment method

To graduate you need to demonstrate that you've a sound understanding of the theory you've learnt and the ability to apply it. We've designed coursework and assessments with this in mind. You'll be assessed through essays, practice assessments and a case scenario examination. You’ll also take part in an OSCE followed by a viva. In addition, a practice competency document will need to be successfully completed.


Entry requirements

You will be a nurse or midwife registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council working within a special care, high dependency, or intensive neonatal care setting.
