Course summary

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) plays a critical role in contemporary health and social care. Delivered by a highly qualified team of psychotherapy and counselling professionals, this course provides valuable insights into the creative and collaborative use of CBT with clients. You will learn to assess, formulate, provide interventions, and evaluate your practice across a range of conditions, from anxiety and depression to personality disorders and schizophrenia, including other complex needs. Please note: This programme is not available to applicants who require a Student Visa due to its structure. You will:

  • Explore new developments in CBT, including mindfulness and compassion-focused therapy.
  • Focus on interventions for a wide spectrum of conditions, from anxiety and depression to more complex mental health issues.
Course structure:
  • MSc: one year full-time; two years part-time.
  • PgDip: one year full-time; two years part-time.
The course involves a mix of half-day and full-day sessions, with optional modules on the part-time route delivered in block sessions. Depending on your experience and interests, you can choose from a variety of modules and have the opportunity to exit with different awards.

Modules

In semester one, you will study Introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and CBT Protocol and Skills Part One. In semester two, you will explore Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Anxiety Disorders and Addictive Behaviour and CBT Protocol and Skills Part Two. You will also choose from one of the following optional modules: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Complex Cases, Compassion Focused Therapy, Mindfulness Based Approaches with CBT, or CBT for Children and Young People. In semester three, you will complete a Dissertation.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include tutor and peer practical in-class assessments, case studies, and reflective assignments with portfolios of learning.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for this course, you should have an upper second-class honours degree in psychology or a related discipline, such as counselling or nursing, or a 2:2 degree with a diploma in counselling or its UKCP/BPS equivalent. Additionally, you need at least one year of experience in a mental health setting, an active interest in cognitive behavioural work, and an approved placement where you can work with clients. You should seek supervision from someone experienced in CBT, preferably an accredited supervisor with the BABCP, if aiming for accreditation. Note that the course itself is not accredited and does not provide supervision or placements, but aims to meet BABCP core curriculum guidelines. Accreditation may require additional study. International students must provide an equivalent to the DBS check.
