You will have the option to tailor your degree through option choice and leave with one of Northumbria University’s specialist awards or choose to follow the more general BSc (Hons) Psychology degree course. Northumbria University’s psychology course is taught by experienced, approachable research-active staff who take an innovative approach to learning. You will develop an understanding of the theories behind the ways we think and behave, examining a wide range of domains within psychology including cognitive psychology, psychobiology, developmental and social psychology. Lab sessions give you valuable hands-on practical experience and you’ll have access to state-of-the art facilities. The optional work placement and your final year research project will develop your personal and professional skills. To meet the requirements for Graduate Basis for Chartered membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society, you must achieve a 2:2 or higher, and must pass the empirical psychology project. Extended Degree This extended degree provides an alternative route to higher education and supports those who don’t meet the standard entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. It includes a foundation year where you will explore a wide range of specialisms linked to psychology. What will I learn in my Foundation Year? The foundation year of this course covers psychology and its various disciplines including health occupational and organisational, and sport and exercise. Throughout the year you will gain an understanding of the domains, classic studies, career paths, underlying debates, controversies and career paths related to psychology. You will acquire knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of psychology and develop academic skills necessary to pursue your degree. The foundation year of the course delivered at level 3 which develops your ability to study in Higher Education is not accredited.
