Course summary

The Master of Music (MMus) programme is designed for students wishing to be professional musicians: performers and composers. It aims to equip students with the necessary musical skills, insight and and experience required by the contemporary profession in its widest sense but with a focus on the Western Classical and Jazz traditions; the Composition, Ensemble, and Performance pathways each offer discrete comprehensive specialist training. Key Features

  • Provides advanced musical training at postgraduate level which encourages the demonstration of individual musical talent and scholarship.
  • Enables musicians of proven ability, and with the potential for further training, to advance and refine their skills and specialism/s and deepen their professional expertise.
  • Acknowledges the significance of musical context, highlighting the relationship of music to wider artistic, historical, philosophical, cultural and/or social practices, issues and/or phenomena.
  • Cultivates musicians who have the ability to work in a variety of complex musical groupings and to exercise leadership in professional practice.
  • Creates an environment which encourages risk and nurtures creativity and innovation, reflecting cutting-edge thinking within the profession.
  • Produces enterprising, entrepreneurial musicians equipped both for today’s diverse, internationalised and ever-changing music profession.

Principal study options

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Main specialism

Only one specialism is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Entry requirements

Good 2:1 pass in a BMus (Hons) Or an equivalent qualification such as a Performer's Diploma (LTCL, LRAM, LRSM, ARCM etc.) Other equivalent qualifications and/or relevant prior experience may be considered


Assessment locations

In the event of a successful assessment, applicants may be invited for a further interview prior to being made an offer.

Remote assessment recordings may be accepted in the event that you cannot attend an assessment in person.
