Course summary

With an international reputation for excellence, our BA (Hons) Musical Theatre (Triple Threat) course provides you with strong industry links, guaranteed performance opportunities, and the ability to work with professional practitioners as you study dance, acting and singing. You will receive training in every aspect of Musical Theatre and focus on developing your technique and skills in acting, singing and dance equally. You will access vocal masterclasses, one-to-one singing lessons, ensemble, singing and acting through song. Guaranteed performance opportunities in fully-staged productions where students get to showcase public performances with professional production teams for regional tour and major art festivals as well as premiering new commissions. At the end of your first year, you will take part in an ensemble showcase presentation assessment and an informal audition to be placed into one of two companies during your second year. These auditions lead to a public performance in The Alexandra Theatre, Bognor Regis in your second year. Masterclasses given by visiting professionals, in areas as diverse as stage combat and costume making, provide exciting opportunities to work with leading practitioners. Modules

Year One In your first year you will develop your acting, singing and dance skills through technical classes and build you foundational knowledge for the rest of your degree. Year Two Become part of a company Alongside your technical development classes, you will be placed in two companies and over the course of the year will engage in a fully-staged performance at The Alexandra Theatre, a professional 350-seater theatre venue in Bognor Regis, and will participate in a series of practical research projects (MT Lab) in the University’s own studio space, The Assembly Theatre. Explore additional specialisms In addition, can start to specialise in either Stage Management or Arts Management. You will undertake additional practical tasks as part of the chosen specialism and choose complementary contextual or theoretical modules to support your work. You will receive professional mentoring and hands on experience in your chosen specialism to enhance your training. Year Three In your third year you will be placed into one of three companies. You will continue to complete technical classes in acting, singing and dance and undertake a weekly specialist workshop programme run by external practitioners covering a range of areas in preparation for the industry. There are also two Teaching modules available to take as an option open to all students on a selection basis.

Qualification requirements

Candidates will be required to demonstrate, in a performance audition, ability in dance, acting and singing. Applicants with high levels of performance skills may be considered for a lower academic offer.

Audition

Overview In the first year of study all students will embark on a technical foundation year of acting, singing and dance classes and will then specialise in year two. The dance classes are streamed according to ability, so it is essential that all audition candidates participate in the dance section of the audition The single honours route has a triple threat focus and while candidates need to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in all three areas, the audition will also consider those with a stronger skill in one area as long as there is an acceptable level of ability in the other two. The audition process will be the same for all candidates. There will be three aspects to the audition: Audition content Dance: You will be taught some technical exercises in the centre and across the floor and also a musical theatre routine,(compulsory), a short tap routine (optional ) and will need to demonstrate some ballet technique, (compulsory). Please bring appropriate clothing and jazz and tap shoes, (if you have them) Singing: Please prepare two contrasting songs from the musical theatre canon. You will be asked to choose one to start with and if required you may be asked to sing some of the second. Please bring the music for the accompanist (no photocopies unless you have permission) and strictly no a capella or backing tracks Acting: The audition will include a short improvisation workshop. Please also prepare one short up-beat monologue that relates to you as an actor and that you feel appropriate to the Musical Theatre art form. It should last no more than 2 minutes.
