Course summary
The MSc (Research) programme in Environmental Science will allow you to undertake research that addresses the world’s foremost environmental challenges, and that tackles social inequality and exclusion. You will be supported by our leading academic experts to develop detailed knowledge and advanced skills that will result in the delivery of a research thesis based on a topic of your choice. You can opt to complete your research thesis in 1 year (full time) or 2 years (part-time). Our reputation is for world-leading research centered around 3 key areas: • Environmental Futures (with specific foci on water security, climate change, and biophysical responses to environmental change). • Social Futures (with specific foci on socio-spatial inequalities, safety and security, and the creation of just societies and spaces). • Geographic Information Science (GISci) and Digital Geographies (through the use of GIS, satellite remote sensing, and environmental modelling). Our current research topics include: • Cultural geography – e.g. tourism, heritage • Ecosystems and ecology– e.g. tropical forest ecology, carbon sequestration and storage, ecosystem services • Geohazards and risk – e.g. tsunami, landslides, floods • Health, disability and wellbeing – e.g. social care and support, social exclusion/inclusion • Hydrology and geomorphology – e.g. water quality, glaciology, hydrometry, water security • Policing and security – e.g. community policing, surveillance, human trafficking • Livelihoods and migration– e.g. displaced communities, children and youth, the Global South • Remote sensing and GIS – e.g. photogrammetry, satellite remote sensing, spatial modelling You are encouraged to check the research interests of potential supervisors and their relevant works before submitting an application.
