Course summary

Data science is rapidly emerging within all organisations. With the explosion of big data, the need for fully trained scientists, analysts and programmers is in demand now more than ever. Businesses now rely on data to uncover hidden patterns and unknown correlations to make better decisions and evaluate effectiveness. Students will graduate with the ability to apply high-level analytical skills and knowledge to solve a range of real-world problems. The course develops a broad range of transferable skills and expertise that will enable graduates to play a leading role, at both a technical and practical level, in the industry.

Modules

The MSc Data Science has six core taught modules divided into two steams. Each stream will be taught in three consecutive eight week blocks. Stream One: • Applied statistics for data science • Data mining and statistical forecasting • Project management and research methodology Stream Two: • Principles of computing • Machine learning and decision making • Big data and analytics Students will also be asked to complete an individual research project, worth 60 credits, during the summer. At the beginning of each stream you will be taught the fundamentals when it comes to applied statistics, computing technology, programming and database systems. You will then build on your existing analytical and technical skills to understand how to use industry software used in the workplace, before preparing for your individual research project.

Assessment method

Several modules are assessed entirely through coursework and some involve coursework and within class examinations.
