THIS EXCITING DEGREE PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR SECOND-LANGUAGE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH WHO HAVE AN INTEREST IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS. The programme aims to assist students in their progression towards proficiency in English, and to help them develop transferable skills which will enable graduates to work more comfortably in the English language, to deal with international customers and partners, and to gain confidence in seeking employment in an English-speaking environment.The programme also offers an opportunity to those who intend to train as TESOL professionals and teach English in the UK or internationally to develop these skills through the optional Theory and Practice in English Language Teaching Module.Classes develop languages skills through group discussions, presentations and reading and writing tasks. Lessons use a combination of the latest English language resources and authentic materials. PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS • This programme is designed for domestic, EU and international students looking to become proficient in English and to expand their knowledge of intercultural identities, teacher education, and analysing discourse. • This programme will provide you with English language skills that will open up a range of career opportunities with organisations around the world. • This one or two-year course offers entry at degree year level, building on your previous studies with a range of core and optional modules on Academic English, Cultural Studies, English Language Teaching, Dissertation Research, Business English and many more. • With an emphasis on small group teaching, you will study all aspects of the English language. • You will refine and expand your knowledge and understanding of the language and its cultures, with a focus on authentic language development. PROGRAMME DETAILS Work placement opportunities can be organised through the School of Education and Social Sciences. The BA also offers an excellent pathway into the MEd TESOL programme offered by our School. CAREERS English is the language of international business and fluency immediately makes you moreemployable, providing you with a strong base for working in a range of national and international organisations. This degree demonstrates to employers that you possess a high standard of fluency, enabling you to work globally or in your own country dealing with international customers and partners.Upon graduation, our students have continued their studies at postgraduate level in TESOL, Education, Social Sciences, Business and other related areas.

Modules

Year three Over two trimesters, you will further refine your study of English language and learn about English-speaking culture. Trimester 1 Advanced English Language 1, Cultures of the English-speaking World 1 and one option module. Trimester 2 Advanced English Language 2, Cultures of the English-speaking World 2 and one option module. Year four Trimester 1 You will study English Proficiency 1, Dissertation 1 and one option module. Trimester 2 You will study English Proficiency 2, Dissertation 2 and one option module. Option modules include: Academic Writing, Analysing Discourse, Meaning and Language, Business English, Theory and Practice of English Language Teaching, or any other appropriate University module. Learn a Language (optional) This course also gives you the option of taking a language module, which can count towards your degree. These modules cover multiple languages and range from absolute beginner to near-native speaker level.

Assessment method

Classes develop languages skills through group discussions, presentations and reading and writing tasks. Lessons use a combination of the latest English language resources and authentic materials. The maximum class size is 25 students. Classes are usually 3 hours in duration (e.g. 0900-1200) and, during this time, there will be a short break of approximately 15 minutes. The assessment varies from module to module, but it typically involves a combination of presentations, portfolios, written assignment and class tests.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)

Year 3 Entry: Two years’ of University study at Level 7 and Level 8, or HND award or equivalent at SCQF Level 8 IELTS: 6.0 with no component under 5.5, or equivalent Year 4 Entry: Three years’ of study at University Level of which at least SCQF Level 9 should be validated by a HEI. This study would ideally be in English as a Second Language or a related subject, but previous experience of studying other subjects will also be taken into consideration. IELTS: 6.0 with no component under 5.5, or equivalent

For Year 3 entry applicants will be required to have a minimum of 2 years’ of University study at Level 7 and Level 8. For entry to the Honours year, applicants will be required to have at least 3 years' study of University study at least at Level 9 (Year 3) which must be in English as a second or other language validated by a HEI. Applicants must have a minimum IELTS 6.0, or equivalent.

The reason for this is that it’s essential that you are able to read, speak and understand the English language to get the most out of your time at UWS. TUITION FEE INFORMATION - SCOTTISH STUDENTS: Eligible Scottish domiciled students can usually apply to have their tuition fees paid for them each year of their studies by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). If you're not sure about your eligibility, you should contact SAAS. You need to apply to SAAS each year of study to have your tuition fees paid directly to UWS. TUITION FEE INFORMATION - UK, IRISH & GIBRALTARIAN STUDENTS: Eligible students who are domiciled in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland as well as from the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar or the Republic of Ireland will qualify for tuition fees of £9,250 per academic session of study to a maximum of three years if you are studying on a four year bachelor degree course (eg. BAcc (Hons) / BA (Hons) / BEng (Hons) / BSc (Hons)). So, if your degree is four years' duration, you will only be charged tuition fees for three years. Similarly, if you are studying a five year integrated master's degree course (eg. MEng (Hons)) the you will only be charged tuition fees for four years.
