Course summary
Most students wishing to work at doctoral level in education will have already been working in the education sector for a number of years, as teachers, administrators, advisers, inspectors, etc. For some, the established PhD route of individual, in-depth study of one specialised topic is the most appropriate approach to research. For many others, however, there is a need for a new approach which provides a broad-based knowledge of a number of aspects of education together with the opportunity to research a specific issue of professional concern. The EdD programme provides for those needs by combining taught units with an individually supervised thesis. The programme aims to:
- provide a flexible programme of academic and professionally relevant study at doctoral level in the discipline of Education Studies for students from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds;
- equip students with wide-ranging knowledge related to essential issues in policy, practice, research and management;
- develop in students an in-depth understanding and appreciation of specific, specialist topics related to their professional lives and work.
Entry requirements
Prior study at Masters level is normally required for entry on to the EdD. It is possible for students who have been following the MA in Education Studies programme to move up to the EdD programme after completing Part 1 of the MA without moving on to the MA dissertation. Transfer of credits into the EdD is evaluated case by case, as the EdD is essentially a research degree. Applicants who are not native English speakers should have either an IELTS result of 6.0 or above, with no individual score lower than 5.5, or a TOFEL score of 560 paper-based or 220 computer-based, unless they have already studied at university level through the medium of English. Applicants are required to be interviewed in person or by other means.
