Course summary

Develop your professional practice in production or performance and prepare for a variety of roles and an exciting career in the music industry. This practical course has been designed to help students realise their ambition of working in the music industry. You'll have access to UCW's studio and their fully equipped rehearsal rooms and performance space are also available for you to use. Training in Ableton Live and Logic X is provided by certified trainers. UCW music students have recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Monnow Valley Studio, Rockfield Studios, Modern World Studios and Sawmills Studio. UCW music students are provided with the opportunity to perform at local, regional and international venues, festivals and events. You'll also benefit from being part of Creative Arts Weston. Here you'll join an exciting and passionate creative community, where you'll be well placed to join the arts industry, leading the way as part of the next creative generation. Taught by University Centre Weston (UCW).

Modules

Your first year introduces you to the professional music fundamentals of music theory, sound production and live performance, with your skills and knowledge developed in the classroom, in the studio or on stage.You also take part in workshops to improve your musicianship, rehearsal and performance techniques, and recording skills. The second year continues to develop your performance and studio skills, while you'll also be offered the chance to learn more about live event management. You'll gain an understanding of the music industry from a business and socioeconomic perspective, and work by yourself and with others to produce your own music in response to studies in composition and songwriting. The course culminates in you producing a professional portfolio to demonstrate your skills in your artistic specialism, as a performer, producer, composer or engineer, for example. You'll also undertake a research project in an area of academic interest, and engage with the music industry in a professional context via a work placement, series of performances, or production of a music product.

Assessment method

Assessment is via a combination of practical exams and coursework.
