Course summary

1st in the UK for our research impact in Education in REF 2021 (Times Higher Education) 2nd in the UK for Childhood and Youth Studies (Complete University Guide 2025) 100% of our research impact in Social Work and Social Policy was assessed to be world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021) We look critically at the differing political and ethical claims on childhood and youth that inform contemporary policy and practice. You’ll explore new and original ways of thinking about and working with children and young people. Through the course, you’ll learn to:

  • communicate effectively with child- and youth-focused professionals
  • carry out empirical research with children and young people
  • transfer your analytical, writing and other skills to the workplace.
You can study modules across anthropology, international development and child rights, sociology, gender studies, sexual health, psychology, media and social work. We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision. Entry requirements

You should normally have a lower second-class (2.2) undergraduate honours degree or above, or be able to demonstrate the ability to study at the appropriate level. Subject-specific requirements Your undergraduate degree can be in any subject. Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis, and in certain circumstances you may be accepted on to the course if you can demonstrate the ability to study at the appropriate level. You may be accepted on to the course if you have equivalent professional qualifications and/or professional experience. We particularly welcome applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential, enthusiasm and commitment to study.
