Course summary

Deepen Your Expertise in English Literature and Language The Master of Research (MRes) in English at the University of Chester offers an exceptional opportunity for students passionate about English literature and/or language to undertake an independent research project. Whether you're aiming for a career in academia or seeking to enhance your research skills, this course provides a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment to explore your chosen topic in depth. Expert Faculty, Support, and Resources The MRes in English is designed to allow you to develop and complete an independent research project in English literature and/or language, with the support of a well-qualified supervisor. An initial Research Methods module will ensure that you have the necessary skills to advance to the dissertation. Your supervisor will be part of a team of active researchers, with a specialism in the field you wish to pursue, and therefore well-placed to help you shape your project. You will also be joining a dynamic community of postgraduate researchers in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. While you will be developing as an autonomous and independent researcher, the University recognises the importance of academic guidance and pastoral care, and offers a supportive and creative environment in which to learn and study, including an exceptional Careers and Employability team. Teaching and Learning While the MRes requires substantial independent study, you have the opportunity to have regular meetings with your supervisor, attend research skills training events within the academic department and the Faculty, and use the online postgraduate research development tools. You will also be invited to attend postgraduate and staff research seminars. Assessment You will be assessed through coursework - for example book reviews, annotated bibliographies, essays, reports, presentations - and a dissertation. Career Opportunities The MRes is an ideal pathway to PhD for those who are considering a future career in academia, but the strengths developed during the degree, such as advanced communication, analytical, and research skills, will be attractive to employers in a wide range of fields. Location and Facilities The course is based in Chester's city centre, providing a conducive environment for academic research and study. Ready to Take the Next Step?
