Course summary
This unique Master of Research (MRes) degree in Equestrian Science provides the ideal opportunity for you to develop your expertise in your preferred equestrian-focused research area, whilst contributing to new industry knowledge through a significant piece of academic research. You could design your research to support you in your existing career or link it to an aspect of the equine industry into which you would like to progress. We can support you to develop a valuable research focus, if required. Our Equestrian Performance Research Arena is fast developing its reputation for world-leading research. You’ll be supported to design and conduct your research by academically and industry-experienced lecturers and professors. You’ll benefit from world-class research facilities on campus, including our commercial equine and rider performance centres, training arenas, scientific laboratories, as well as our livery centre with over 230 horses and riders at different levels, from Olympic and Paralympic athletes to novice riders. You may choose to focus your research on one of these contexts, or in an external location, relevant to your project. Delivery is flexible and often at weekends to fit around your work or other commitments. Your research project can be developed in your own time to fit around your other commitments.
Modules
Our modules are developed regularly to reflect student and industry demands, ensuring you’re well prepared to enter skilled employment on graduation. The majority of courses are comprised of both compulsory and optional modules, the latter of which you'll be able to choose from to suit your interests and career goals. Most courses also include work placement learning, to help you gain essential experience for your future. Modules include: Extended Postgraduate Dissertation, The Research Process. Modules are sometimes subject to change. Optional modules change each year - you can attend introductory sessions before deciding which ones to study.
Assessment method
You will be assessed through a mixture of written, practical and oral exams as well as oral and poster presentations and written assignments. The extended dissertation requires the students to undertake a research project from conception, implementation and through to write-up, in an area of their interest. Many of the modules will be marked based on a mixture of assessment types, whilst others will be based solely on one type of assessment.
Entry requirements
Academic 2:1 honours degree in a relevant subject. Students with 2:2 and relevant experience will be considered on a case by case basis. Non-academic Students with non-relevant qualifications but with sufficient work experience or professional experience will be considered on an individual basis. International In addition to the academic qualification an IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required. Please contact us for further information.

The Hartpury Postgraduate Studentship Scheme has been developed to make postgraduate study affordable and to provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience to compliment and enhance their academic study.
