Course summary

How have digital technologies radically transformed our daily lives? How do institutions such as family, work or the media, structure our values and actions? How can social inequality be tackled? On our sociology programmes, you’ll research hands-on how societies change, develop and are challenged. You’ll learn from our team of internationally leading academics who offer global perspectives on race and racism, politics, urban life, social movements, migration, digital media, comedy, gender, and popular culture. The first year is designed to offer you a solid base in theoretical and methodological innovations in sociology. As you progress through the course, you will be able to choose from a range of modules to follow your own interests and create your own sociology portfolio. Our modules are designed and taught by researchers who are sought-after experts in sociology, cultural studies, and digital media. You will benefit from their expertise and their experiences working with household names such as the BBC, the Museum of London, Leicester Comedy Festival, the Guardian, and the British Film Institute (BFI). In your final year, you can design and carry out your own research project supported by your supervisor. Depending on the modules you choose, you will go on field trips where you will be able to apply your learning to current issues and broaden your theoretical imagination. Previous fieldtrips have included: the Barbican; British Board of Film Classification; London Migration Museum; Museum of Comedy; Museum of London; regeneration areas (e.g. Spitalfields, Smithfield); and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Gain an insight into life after your studies by putting your learning into practice and opting for a one-year work placement or two shorter placements. We have excellent links with the creative and cultural sector, local authorities, schools and the third sector so you will have the opportunity to apply for high quality placements across London and overseas. You will graduate with valuable work experience and understanding of the working world that will enhance your employment prospects. Our sociology students have done their placements abroad and in the U.K., they have undertaken placements at a variety of companies including Deluxe Entertainment, the Disney Channel, the Home Office, British Youth Council, Citizens Advice Bureau and the Department of Work and Pensions.
