Course summary
Birmingham Newman University in partnership with the Centre for Paediatric Spiritual Care delivers the only Postgraduate Certificate in Paediatric and Maternity Chaplaincy available in the UK. We are applying to the UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy for this to be a qualifying course for registration. This programme is run alongside Birmingham Newman University’s highly regarded own Postgraduate Certificate in Chaplaincy and follows the same 3x 20 credit modules although this course is run over 18-24 months on a rolling programme: The course offers a professional development qualification for those wishing to gain further grounding in both the theological and pastoral aspects of their Chaplaincy.

Assessment method
You will be assessed using a variety of methods, some of these include tutorials, delivering a seminar to peers, poster presentation, and a reflective portfolio. All of these assessments will include links to your experience as a Chaplain as well as to your academic reading and development.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Entry requirements
You will normally need a good undergraduate degree or equivalent or substantial experiential learning and demonstrate the ability to study at postgraduate level. You will normally be working as a chaplain or similar in a paid or voluntary capacity for the equivalent of 2 sessions a week for each of the modules. One of your referees will need to be a person with direct experience of your practice, ideally also a chaplain. We will discuss your experience at interview. All applicants will be interviewed in person or over zoom, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet one of the teaching team. There are a limited number of opportunities to be based at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital for the practice element of the course. Email Rev Paul Nash [email protected] if you are interested in this option. If you are offered a place on the course you will need to provide evidence of an current enhanced DBS check. We will accept an enhanced DBS as long as you are signed up to the online update service from the date the DBS was issued. We will need the certificate and you will need to provide access to your online DBS. If you do not have an enhanced DBS and/ or the online update service you can apply through Newman which will be an additional cost to you.
