The foundation year offers the chance to strengthen your skills, knowledge and confidence before you advance to stage one of your honours degree. It could also be beneficial if you are planning a career change. By studying this course you will learn how to use and develop Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices and applications, and unlock their power for enhancing how businesses operate and how society thrives. INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS: Take advantage of our connections with employers on work placements and projects. This course is designed in close collaboration with industrial practitioners, technologists, specialists and professional bodies to offer rigorous professional and practical training backed with sound academic theory. MODERN FACILITIES: You will learn in a modern, flexible and supportive environment, supported by specialist facilities and be taught by expert staff. You will be based in our East Midlands Institute of Technology at our Enterprise Centre. WHAT YOU'LL COVER: Your first year provides an overview of a wide range of areas covering the fundamentals of networks, programming and computer systems. In your second year you will cover topics such as emerging IoT and IIoT technologies, wired and wireless communications for IoT and instrumentation and automation. Modules in your third year will give you the opportunity to learn about artificial intelligence and data science, real time embedded systems and secure communications, as well as carrying out an individual Project. HOW YOU WILL LEARN: You will be taught in lectures, which are intentionally interactive and incorporate questions and answers sessions. Practical sessions will allow you to develop skills in equipment use, the creation of small systems and the evaluation of these. Seminars and tutorials provide opportunities to expand your knowledge on topics. You will also take part in team work to develop interpersonal and communication skills. Technology enhanced learning plays an important role and interaction is supported by the use of appropriate virtual learning environments. YOUR CAREER: Graduates will be able to enter destinations in local governments, engineering companies and health organisations as IoT developers, working on projects such as smart devices and smart infrastructure but also digital twin implementations. They will also be suitable to find employment as data scientists or data engineers. STUDY OPTIONS: This course is also available without a Foundation Year option. This course is also available with a Placement Year option.
