Course summary
The new Foundation Degree is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed in the animation industry. This course covers a wide range of foundational topics, including the principles of animation, character and environment design, 3D design, and stop motion delivered by industry-experienced staff. Throughout the program, students blend theoretical studies and hands-on practical learning, ensuring they develop creative and technical proficiencies. The animation studio hosts state-of-the-art facilities including 24” Cintiq pro graphics tablets, a green screen, stop motion facilities, and industry-standard software. The structure of this degree allows students to gain significant hands-on experience early in their education, after completing Level 5, students will have the flexibility to either enter the animation industry with a solid portfolio and practical experience, including live projects from the course, or continue their studies to earn a full bachelor's degree by progressing to our Level 6 BA (hons) Animation. As part of our Work Ready Guarantee, you will work on live briefs and benefit from industry expertise through our specialist lectures and workshops from animators such as Alex Davy and Arcus Studios. You will work on personal and professional development modules to set up creative and professional social media and portfolios. Students as Producer provides opportunities for students to undertake cross-disciplinary work with other students from other vocational areas. This Foundation Degree in Animation is ideally suited to individuals who have a passion for animation and are eager to learn the fundamental principles and techniques required to bring characters and environments to life. Also, those who have a strong interest in art and design and want to explore how their skills can be applied to the dynamic field of animation and those who prefer a hands-on learning approach and want to gain significant practical experience early in their education. Academic progression is available through our one-year BA (Hons) Animation (Top-up) degree. You can also progress into the industry through employer links and communication in your Professional Development module. Career paths range from character and environment designers, 2D animators, 3D modellers and animators, motion graphics artists and more. Previous graduates have progressed into work as storyboard artists, animators, illustrators, motion graphics artists, modellers and character/environment designers. Many graduates also move into self-employment as a freelance illustrator or animator.

Assessment method
You will learn through a variety of teaching and learning methods including written practical assignments, work-based projects, presentations, peer work, and independent study. You will develop relevant creative skills underpinned with theoretical and practical knowledge to prepare you for a rapidly evolving industry. You will also participate in lectures, group work, and self-directed study. You will be given opportunities to present group work to your peers developing skills in public speaking and increasing self-confidence. Assessment is carried out through reports, presentations, peer assessments, work-based projects, and portfolios.
