Course summary

Learn about life at all levels, from molecules and cells to whole organisms. On this three-year Biology degree at the University of Southampton you will explore topics looking at species, communities and entire ecosystems to prime yourself for a broad choice of potential careers. You will be taught by expert staff who are actively engaged in high-profile research, have the flexibility to tailor your degree through our extensive range of modules, and will be based in our state-of-the-art, multi-million pound Life Sciences building that houses plant growth, tissue culture, and invertebrate facilities. You will gain extensive practical experience from a variety of field trips in the UK, Belize and Spain, can benefit from the close links we have with the nearby Marwell Wildlife organisation, can spend a semester studying at a university in Europe or Australasia, and can select a year in employment if you wish to gain experience in an industry setting. We will also help you kick-start your career* in a variety of sectors including medicine, biotechnology, conservation and the environment. *99% of Biological Sciences graduates were in employment or further study 15 months after graduation (Graduate Outcomes 2020/2021).

Modules

We have a varied range of modules for all years, to offer you the opportunity to tailor your studies to your passions and to equip you with the skills and experiences needed for success as a graduate. Examples of modules include: Year 1: Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Fundamentals of Cell Biology and Physiology, How to Think Like a Scientist, Origins of Biodiversity. Year 2: Evolution, Plant Development and Function, Quantitative Methods in Biological & Environmental Science. Assessment method

You'll learn, and be assessed, through a range of methods designed to equip you with the skills you need for success after graduating. The learning activities include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning. The assessment methods include coursework, laboratory reports and essays, individual and group projects, oral presentations, written and practical exams.

GCSEs: The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales).
