Commercial photography is needed in the 21st Century as much as any other time in the history of the medium. Everyone has a camera but not everyone is capable of making high quality imaging on time, to budget and of a professional standard and concept that fits the demands of the current industry. We provide superb facilities and practicing industry-experienced staff that allows an exceptional learning experience. At The Northern School of Art you will acquire the technical and transferable creative skills needed to be a successful practitioner in the commercial photography industry, fulfilling briefs to professional standards. Commercial Photography is based on the integration of creative practice/creativity and practical skills and is intended to prepare graduates for employment in the creative imaging industry. This course has been designed in consultation with professional practitioners, trade bodies, on-line content producers and industry partners. All students become members of the AOP and have the opportunity to become a Phase One Certified Professional. You will work within a purpose-built environment with industry approved digital equipment, software, techniques and facilities. A varied and intensive introduction allows you the opportunity to become technically competent and creatively aware with a broad range of relevant skills. As you progress you’ll be encouraged to develop your understanding and acquisition of transferable skills alongside the development of your portfolio in your chosen specialist direction.

In your first year (Level Four) you will explore: Digital Photography and Workflow • Commercial Lighting • Introduction to Critical Thinking • Digital Enhancement and Retouching • Genres in a Commercial Context In your second year (Level Five) you will develop: Fashion Photography • Advertising and Product Photography • Critical Thinking and Contemporary Photography • Advanced Enhancement and Retouching • Negotiated Project In your third year (Level Six) you will produce: Project Research and Preparation • Dissertation/Report • Final Major Project • Final Show and Portfolio

Assessment method

In course assessment. Each module is assessed upon completion and given a percentage mark.

Your potential is our main focus when assessing your suitability for the programme you have applied to. Because of this, we take into account all aspects of your application and not just your academic profile. If you are a mature applicant (i.e. 21+ years), we will place more emphasis on your portfolio and the skills and experience you can demonstrate at interview. Your portfolio, which you bring to interview, is an integral part of the assessment. It should demonstrate your current skills, interests and knowledge where appropriate. It is also expected that you will bring evidence of written work to interview and/or have a Level 2 qualification in English/Literacy.

As with most creative programmes delivered at higher education, this programme will have additional costs such as material and basic tools and contribution towards educational visits to ensure successful completion of the programme. The School offers financial support packages to help with this, whether this be through means-tested bursaries, scholarships or grants.
