Course summary

This programme focuses on using 'exercise as medicine' to treat, manage, and rehabilitate patients recovering from illness. Accredited by the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS), it is one of only two programmes in the UK to receive this recognition. Successful students will be eligible to register with AHCS as Clinical Exercise Physiologists upon completing all modules, clinical assessments, and 140 placement hours. You will:

  • Develop an advanced understanding of pathophysiology and aetiology of disease states within the Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) scope of practice, including cancer, cardiovascular conditions, frailty, renal issues, mental health, metabolic disorders, musculoskeletal problems, neurological conditions, and respiratory diseases.
  • Learn to support patients in living healthier lifestyles and self-managing long-term health conditions.
  • Acquire practical skills in assessing disease markers and prescribing exercise for various disease states.
  • Gain experience with state-of-the-art physiological and health assessment equipment in our Exercise Physiology Laboratory.
With the benefits of exercise for disease management well established, and an increasing number of patients being referred for exercise screening and prescription, particularly those with chronic conditions such as coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, the demand for qualified clinical exercise physiologists is high. There is a significant shortfall in qualified professionals, leading to long waiting lists in some areas. This MSc programme is offered full-time over three academic trimesters (September to September), with the first two trimesters running two days a week. The programme provides the opportunity to achieve a postgraduate certificate (PgCert), postgraduate diploma (PgDip), or master's (MSc) degree.
